The rhythm that breaks people

Researchers from Oxford, Stanford, and the London School of Economics published a paper last week testing a simple hypothesis: can AI out-persuade humans? They gathered nearly 7,000 participants across four studies. Regular volunteers, elite competitive debaters, and professional canvassers.

In all four cases, AI won.

What's interesting is where the advantage actually comes from. When researchers handicapped the AI to match human response time and word count, the gap shrank but didn't close. AI averaged 294 words per reply. The debaters averaged 54. Not a superior strategy, just the ability to deliver more facts per conversation than any human can manage in real time.

The final experiment moved beyond opinion change. Professional canvassers competed against AI at convincing people to make real donations to Save the Children. AI raised nearly 3x more. If these models are more persuasive than world-champion debaters, who ensures they won't be used with exactly that purpose in mind?
